EU ground-source heat pump installation base exceeds 1 million units

Oct. 25, 2011 – A new study has found a 2.9% decrease of the ground source heat pump (GSHP) market in the EU in 2010, partly due to an increasing focus on aerothermal heat pumps. Despite this, cumulative GSHP installations in the EU surpassed 1 million units, with leading markets in terms of 2010 sales being Sweden, Germany, France, Finland, Austria and the Netherlands.

The study by EurObserv'ER concerns data on ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), namely brine-water, ground-to-water and ground-to-ground (direct expansion) heat pumps, but also hydrothermal (water-to-water) heat pumps, which offer similar technical properties and performance levels to GSHPs.

According to EurObserv’ER about 104,000 GSHPs were sold in 2010 in the main European markets, which is 2.9% down on 2009. The rate of decline was however lower than the rate observed between 2008 and 2009 (6.6% drop).

Although sales of GSHPs in 2010 were only about 2007 levels, the installed base in the European Union (EU) exceeded the 1 million unit threshold at the end of 2010, accounting for 12,611 MWth capacity combined with captured renewable energy of about 2.1 Mtoe.
