GSHP to heat and cool air in Madrid metro

Sep. 23, 2010 – The project at the Pacifico station of the Madrid underground system aims to reuse waste heat produced by the trains and its users to heat and cool docks, offices and commercial spaces through a ground source heat pump system (GSHP).

The geothermal heat pump is connected to the ground with 32 U-shaped pipes of high density polyethylene, buried about 145 meters below and filled with water without additives. The annual demand is 130 MWh (cooling) and 20.5 MWh (heating).

The most advanced next project of this kind in Europe is under planning for the Vienna Underground. London South Bank University is studying the feasibility of such a project in the London Underground.
