Small pre-assembled family like house at CESI RICERA

A small pre-assembled building available for experimental activities at CESIRICERCA facilities in Milan, has been equipped with a water-to-water electric heat pump. Underground water has been used as the heat source. The water is pumped by a submerged electric pump placed at about -25 m. The heating/cooling plant has been working for a year in order to continously monitor its behaviour in realistic conditions, along a complete summer/winter season.

Project description

Building, overall energy concept

- Small pre-assembled family like house, built in 1997, Surface= 61 m2, S/V=1.22,
average U-value= 0.60 W/m2/K (includes walls and windows)

- Heated/cooled area= 60m2, n.1 storey

- Location: Milan, Italian climatic zone E, degree days (heating) = 2404, design outdoor/indoor temp= -5/+20°C

- Calculated annual heating/cooling demand: 6.250 kWh heating (constant internal temp. 20°C), 3.450 kWh cooling (constant internal temp 24°C)One-famili house in Milano, Italy

- Design heating/cooling peak load: 4,40 kW heating, 3,45 kW cooling

- Ambient heating and cooling by electric heat pump only

- Distribution system: hydronic circuit with fan coils; supply/return temp: 16/10°C cooling, 35/30°C heating

Heat pump system

Climaventa, model HRNH 0011

- Water-to-water heat pump, Climaveneta model HRNH 0011electricity driven, heat source: water, heat sink: water

-Heating and cooling capacity: 6,2 kW winter, 5,5 kW summer (nominal values at standard conditions)

- Operation mode: continuous

- Refrigerant R22

- Heat source: underground water at roughly constant temperature, +16°C, in summer and winter

- Monitoring scheme

Operation experiences

Since the heat-pump is a little oversized for the experimental building, the internal temperatures has been kept higher in winter, and lower in summer, than the design values, in order to have a more regular operation of the heat-pump.

No operation or maintenance problems have been found with the heat-pump, but quite serious fouling problems have been met with the submerged pump and its circuit. Notwithstanding frequent cleaning of the filters and tubing, the pump has progressively lost efficiency and increased its electricity consumption, at the same flow conditions; as a consequence the SPF has a lower value than would have been possible if pump efficiency remained good.
