Hospital in Antwerp

This case study concerns the operational experiences and the excellent results on a Belgian ATES system (Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage) that has been monitored for three years at the “KLINA”-hospital and where an extensive data set is available. Typically, information on energy transfer and consumption, flow rates, temperatures and pressures is obtained. This information is compared with a predefined “reference” installation, existing of contemporary energy systems. This allows to define the actual energy savings and to make a result based cost-benefit analysis.

Project description

Building, overall energy concept

KLINA hospital

- Hospital, built in 2000

- 400 beds

- Located in Antwerp, Meteonorm Uccle

- Heating demand: 400 kW / Cooling demand: 1.250 kW

- Air handling units at low temperature

- Supplemental radiators at high temperature heating with boilers

Heat pump system

- Electic heat pump, ground water

- 2 heat pumps, heating capacity 195 kW each

Operation experiences

- measurement campaign (VITO, 3 heating and cooling seasons)

- pretty difficult start (2000-2002), but eventually a very performant system

Costs, economic efficiency, incentives

  • investment cost total HVAC-system € 755.621,60
  • total economic savings (heat pump+ATES) € 34.537,56
  • Simple pay back time 9,6 years without subsidy or any other financial support
  • financial support (demonstratiesteun) 35%

Regulations, guidelines, benchmarking
