Multifamily residence in Pistoia
The system installed is a ground source heat pump consisting of 2 compressors and 2 horizontal loops aimed at producing both cold and hot fluids necessary to winter and summer climatization and producing domestic hot water by recuperating condensation heat. During winter season, heat is taken from the ground by ground heat collector (horizontal). In summer season the collector is used to take heat in the building and bring it outside. The centralized system is installed in a multifamily residence consisting of 9 flats and 1 office, each of them is equipped with an energy consumption counter. The SPF in winter 2007/2008 was 3.8.

Building, overall energy concept
The building consists of 9 flats and one office (Photos 1 and 2). The total building area is 998 m2 divided into 4 floors. Heating in winter and cooling in summer are ensured thanks to floor radiating panels with humidity rate check by air system control. Radiating panels area is 950 m2.
The whole building has a heating load of 56 kW at the following conditions: 0°C (outdoor temperature) and 20°C (indoor temperature). In summer the value is 46 kW at the following conditions: 35°C (outdoor temperature) and 26°C (indoor temperature).

Heat pump system
The main heat source of the GSHP system is a horizontal loop which has been buried in the ground at a depth of 1,80 m and consists of a Geopex U-tube in 4 trenches (100 m each) containing 4 tubes each. A solar thermal system with a captive area of 36 m2 is integrated. The need of domestic hot water is satisfied through the heat pump by the recovery of condensation heat, at a temperature of 50°C and stored in a tank of 1.500 liters (Photos 3 and 4).

Primary energy need in winter time is 64,02 kWh/m2 year, lower than the threshold set by Ministerial Decree 311/2006 (70,34 kWh/year).
